As their acquisition of Babe Ruth almost immediately elevated their status to baseball’s most dominant team, the New York Yankees embraced that championship formula, winning six pennants in the 1920s to spark a winning tradition that, nearly 100 years later, has waned only on occasion. In fact, in many seasons, anything less than a World Series title has been considered a disappointment in the Bronx. This pinstripers team-signed baseball hails from a span during which the Yanks showed their mettle and regained their imposing qualities. The OAL Harridge sphere was signed specifically in 1932 or 1933: the former year marked by a 107-win campaign and Ruth’s “called shot” in a World Series romp; the latter featuring a torrid 31-13 start before faltering to a second-place finish. The lightly toned orb showcases (12) black-ink steel tip fountain pen signatures, most of which are absolutely stunning in terms of strength and clarity. Includes: Sweet Spot: Ruth (“8-9” strength with a personalization in Ruth’s hand); North Panel: Chapman (“8” strength); South Panel: Altrock (Washington Senators coach; “5” strength with deference to a surface abrasion), Gomez (“6” strength with minimal surface abrasions), Lazzeri (“8-9” strength), Combs (“8” strength) and Crosetti (“7-8” strength); East Panel: Byrd (“8” strength), Allen (“8-9” strength), Dickey (“8” strength), Sewell (“8-9” strength) and Gehrig (“8-9” strength). A tiny hole has been drilled in the trademark stampings (likely to facilitate previous display) and there are small and sporadic applications of period shellac. None of these, however, affect the glorious signatures of members of a well-oiled machine that disposed of opponents at will. Full photo LOA from PSA/DNA.
