Check out this Victorian Era publication from our rare books department. Short-lived yet potent, the 19th Century American Association baseball major league fielded enough talent to challenge the fledgling National League. Issued for the “Season of 1889”, this antique treasure displays in appealing (FR-GD) condition with clean, supple pages and a handsome array of photos. More on our website.

Moderate cover staining and heavy spine wear serve to enhance the authentic nature of this 126-year old relic of the long defunct AA. Team names of the League members surround the titles section on the front cover printed with “Official Score Book Photographs and Sketches of the Brooklyn Base Ball Club, Season of 1889, Price 5 Cents” and printed at top is the Brooklyn Stadium address “Washington Park 5th Avenue and 4th St.”. (14) Interior Brooklyn player photos include stars “Oyster” Burns, Bob Caruthers, “Pop” Corkhill, Dan Foutz, George Pinkney, “Adonis” Terry and manager Bill McGunnigle. This mighty Bridegrooms squad took the AA League title in 1889 and then jumped to the NL in 1890 amazingly winning the pennant that year as well, demonstrating the quality of the AA. With results recorded in pencil, the center spread scoring pages are curiously printed with team names Brooklyn and Metropolitan. The New York Metropolitans AA franchise is cited as having folded after the 1887 with many of its players having been absorbed by the Brooklyn franchise.

Please note, this antique publication has what is potentially a minor restoration in the form of the back cover being adhered to the last page for approximately a half-inch in along the spine. Otherwise it remains highly appealing with abundant original detail.
