At the height of the Depression, after a dozen years of Prohibition, President Hoover arrived in Philadelphia for Game 3 of the World Series...and went down in history as possibly the first U.S. Chief Executive to be publicly booed by the masses. (Marty Appel's fascinating account of the event is linked on our website.) Hoover tossed out the ceremonial first ball to Mickey Cochrane, before the A's fell to the Cardinals 5-2. This 6-1/4 x 10" photo rates EX with pinholes in the corners and is notated on the reverse, "Hoover at Phila Oct 5 1931."
