Changing owners and team nicknames four times, the Youngstown franchise of the Ohio-Pennsylvania baseball minor league demonstrated early league dominance winning championships in 1905-1906-1907. Offered is a 13-1/8 x 9-3/8” team composite photo (VG) of the 1907 contingent known as the Youngstown Champs. Pictured are manager Sam Wright, (7) players who saw MLB service and (10) others. Detailed description on our website.
The short-lived OH-PA League competed during the period 1905-1912, with a Youngstown representative participating in all but 1912. Obviously the 1907-1908 "Champs" adopted their name after the 1905-1906 "Works" squad won the league’s first two titles. Later iterations were the 1909 "Indians" and the 1910-1911 "Steelmen".
Generally the heavy stock photo presents better than the assigned technical grade which is based mainly on corner wear and several negligible spots of surface paper loss. Otherwise it remains quite handsome with clear photo images and an even background color. Featured players are: manager Sam Wright at center, (7) players with MLB service time: Jack Compton, Ed Hilley, Jack McAleese, Harry Ostdiek, Lou Schettler, Charlie Starr, (W.) Bill Thomas; and (10) others: Curley Blount, Dick Breen, ? Glassburner, Homer Mock, Dick Nallin, Joe Ohl, Harry Redman, Albert Servatius, Samuel Smith, B. Thomas.
Reverse side writing reads in part as “Monday P.M. Schettler $3.00 for Lot #8482-368”, indicating this photo was the property of MLB pitcher Lou Schettler who pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1910.
