Dubbed by some the "Original Dream Team," the Buffalo Germans were organized by James Naismith protege Fred Burkhardt at the German YMCA in Buffalo, NY. Here's how author Robert Peterson described their exploits in his book Cages to Jump Shots: Pro Basketball's Early Years: “Over a span of twenty-nine years, including nine in the amateur ranks, the Germans won 761 and lost 85. In one three-year stretch, from 1908 to 1911, they had 111 consecutive victories, a string that seems safe for eternity. The vast majority of their conquests were YMCAs, college teams, semipro clubs playing under National Guard colors, and town teams, some of them from crossroads villages.” This 3-1/2 x 5-1/2" postcard features a striking team photo from the Germans' prime win-streak era with Rohde, Miller, Schell (Capt.), Faust, Heerdt, (Mgr.) in their early-style uniforms with striped stockings and a "WORLD'S CHAMPIONS 1909" basketball at their feet. VG condition.
