Known as the “Grandfather of Black Basketball”, pioneering physical fitness promoter Edwin Bancroft Henderson (d.1977) was a mover and shaker in the world of African-American sports. Recently elected to the basketball HOF in 2013 in recognition of his tireless efforts, Henderson paved the way for thousands of players who have emerged over the past sixty years to dominate the NBA. This dedicated coach and teacher was also enshrined as a charter member of the Black Athletes Hall of Fame in 1974. Dated 9/15/72, this “Alabama Exchange Bank” check (NM) with authentic cancellation stamps on the reverse, is printed at top left with Henderson’s address “403 Bulls Ave. Tuskegee Institute, ALA. 36088”. Henderson’s (“8-9”) quality endorsement appears at bottom right in the usual location. Auction LOA from JSA.
