Description

"Everyone loved him," sportswriter Bert Sugar said of Bill Gallo. "He was probably the second-most outstanding symbol of New York, other than the Statue of Liberty." Gallo (1922-2011) was the New York Daily News sports cartoonist for a half-century, and he continued drawing right up until his death at age 88. Naturally, the Yankees were Gallo's bread and butter. Here are the master's original sketches of Donny Ballgame and the late Yogi: Berra - OAL (Budig) ball, "8-9" signature, tiny smudge on Berra's cheek and text. Mattingly - 1994 World Series ball, LE #8/23, "9-10" signature, negligible smudging on text.
