Unlock a Gold Age comic book treasure chest. Perhaps buried in the Sahara Desert or more likely a warehouse or attic for sixty years, this unopened case of comics is a rare find. Two versions of this 1950s TV action series tie-in were published by Charlton Comics, including a promotional edition for “Heinz 57 Varieties” food products. Housed in a sealed case stamped “Captain Gallant Heinz” is what is believed to be a quantity of (200) untouched original copies of this colorful inaugural issue featuring photos of famed action star “Buster” Crabbe and his son Cuffy. The Crabbes respectively played the roles of “Captain Gallant” and “Legion Mascot” in the related 1955 TV series set in French North Africa. Lead star “Buster” who gained fame as Flash Gordon, Buck Rodgers and Tarzan, also appears inside the front cover in a full page photo and on the back cover in an art image. The inside of the back cover contains a numbered list of Heinz’s 57 different products. More on our website.

Other clues to the pedigree of these long secluded comics are a lack of cover price and date notations. The inside of the back cover is printed at bottom right with “Copyright 1955, Frantel, Inc. New York, N.Y. Printed in U.S.A.” and at bottom left with “Published by U.S. Pictorial, Inc. New York, N.Y.”. While this unopened case should yield many gem examples, it must be noted that the case binding wires have cut into the edges, most likely affecting several issues at top and bottom.
