Minnesota-born Elmer Ellsworth Foster was born in Minneapolis in 1861 and died in Deephaven in 1946. He broke in with the American Association's 1886 NY Metropolitans and later played for the National League's NY Giants and Chicago Colts. Few photographs of him exist aside from tobacco cards—most notably Old Judge. These two surviving images include: 1) 7 x 9-1/2" high-quality sepia studio photo (NM) signed by the photographer and housed in its original portfolio; 2) 10x14 ornate colorized mounted photo (NM) with a 1932 "Master Photo Finishers of America" exhibition-winning ribbon (separated in two by a neat horizontal tear) at upper left and a corresponding imprint at lower right, plus other related labels on the reverse.
