Dedicated autograph collectors enjoy a rare opportunity with this vintage single-signed baseball. Eddie Waitkus’ story is certainly one of baseball’s more interesting tales. A promising Cubs rookie Waitkus (d.1972) was referred to by reporters as “a natural”. Traded to the Phillies in 1949, he was shot by an obsessed woman in a hotel during a return trip to Chicago. This bizarre incident was used as a key element in the movie “The Natural”. Waitkus, who also took part in significant WWII fighting, recovered to have a fine career. Sadly, this battle tested veteran succumbed to a premature demise due to cancer at the age of 53. The offered ONL/Frick ball (EX-MT+) exhibits by far and away the finest example of Waitkus’ autograph on a baseball we have encountered. Located on the sweet spot this tough signature shows solid (“7-8”) quality. Enhancing interest in this unique example is the south panel date “8-19-49” from Waitkus’ first game back in uniform after being shot, leading to the belief the ball was signed at “Eddie Waitkus Night” hosted by the Phillies on that date.
