Description

Transcending geographic boundaries the Notre Dame football program gained national recognition a century ago and has been going strong ever since. The main thrust towards “Fighting Irish” fame came during the reign of immortal coach Knute Rockne who is featured in the highlights of this vintage group with: 1927 team panorama photo (GD-VG); and (2) 1931 memorial tribute publications (both EX). Detailed description on our website.

Beloved coach Rockne met his untimely demise in a 3/31/31 plane crash at Bazaar, KS., the two original memorial publications present were printed shortly after this tragic incident. This serious blow to national moral resulted in a prolonged period of mourning enhanced by widespread media coverage. Though many tribute publications were issued around the U.S. and other parts of the World, the offered pair benefit from the status of being official ND editions published at the source. The complete list of included items is as follows:

1927 Panorama photo titled “Notre Dame 1927 Varsity Squad” (GD-VG), measures 23x11 with individual coach Rockne image at left, full team photo at center and captain John P. Smith individual image at right, printed at bottom right is “With compliments of Sam’l Spiro & Co., clothiers South Bend, Ind.”, photo is bright with nice gloss and off-white borders, all images/text remain sharp, light soiling and several creases are evident, though these conditions only serve to promote the true authentic nature and appeal of this display worthy souvenir, photo is rolled and housed in a protective cardboard tube

1931 “Rockne of Notre Dame” memorial tribute publication (EX) issued by “The Rockne Memorial Association” as noted on the title page and printed on the second page with “Copyright, 1931 by The University of Notre Dame Du Lac”, contains thirty-six pages of biographical text with interspersed photo and sketch illustrations, cover has a few light stains but remains appealing with bold title and solid spine, cream colored pages are crisp and problem free, would rate at least a grade higher were it not for the light stains on the cover

May, 1931 “The Notre Dame Alumnus” magazine (EX) with extensive Rockne tribute coverage with fascinating commentary and a great selection of football related photographs, cover is bright and attractive with only minor wear, pages are light-cream in tone and remain supple and problem free

October, 1930 “The Notre Dame Alumnus” magazine (VG) with football illustration cover for special “Stadium Dedication” content regarding coverage the “New Notre Dame Stadium”, cover shows moderate wear/soiling, pages are off-white and supple with corner wear

c.1960s Pennant (VG-EX) full-size 29x12 with gold lettering/applique on blue field, shows moderate soiling with typical pinholes, tassels are absent

1927 “The Notre Dame Anthology” hardback book (EX) published by “The Scribblers, Notre Dame, Indiana, 1927”, book contains student contributed stories, poems and essays, cover shows light wear, spine is solid, off-white pages are supple
