Description

Preying upon a vulnerable (yet potentially profitable) Babe Ruth, Boston Braves owner Emil Fuchs made a long list of empty promises to the erstwhile Bronx hero. Naïve throughout the proceedings, Ruth suited up and played an integral role in the Braves’ 4-2 opening day triumph. But it wasn’t long before the club endured a 4-20 May and Ruth came to realize that Fuchs’ offer was nothing more than lies cloaked in double talk and legal jargon. For that promising beginning, however, the town was abuzz with its new hero and this baseball was autographed by Ruth and several of his Braves teammates, as well as some legendary contemporaries from both circuits! The medium is an unofficial “Spalding” orb that shows what appears to be game use. The black-ink steel tip fountain pen scriptings range between (“7”) and (“2”) in terms of strength and clarity. Includes: Sweet Spot: Schoolboy Rowe and Bob Brown; North Panel: Paul Dean, Babe Ruth (“7” strength with deference to a small surface abrasion near the end of “Babe”), Hal Lee and Elbie Fletcher; South Panel: Ray Prim, Bob Smith, Dizzy Dean (“5-6” strength), Joe Coscarart, Wally Berger and Al Blanche; West Panel: Rabbit Maranville (“2” strength), Joe Mowry and (2) unidentified; East Panel: Lou Gehrig (“3-4” strength), Les Mallon and (3) unidentified; Reverse Sweet Spot: Tommy Thompson. Full photo LOA from JSA. This item has a reserve (estimated value: $3000-$5000).
