Description

A Giant fan favorite in both Harlem and the Bay Area, Willie Mays brandished and autographed this bat near the tail end of his remarkable career. Turned by Kentucky’s famed Hillerich & Bradsby plant during the 1969-1972 labeling period, the high-grade white ash weapon is a (32-oz/35”) “G69L” block-letter (last name only) model with earmarks of significant game use. Graded A6 by MEARS, the coveted lumber showcases ball, bat-rack, cleat and deeply embedded stitch marks throughout, as well as grain swelling on the hitting surface, a professionally repaired handle crack and a faded notation of “24” on the knob. Between the center brand and barrel stampings, Mays has signed in fiber tip marker (“5-6” strength). While his physical skills waned ever so slightly with age, Mays remained a legendary and imposing presence in the batter’s box. Factory records cite a shipment of this model to Mays on August 22, 1969, as well as an April 18, 1970 order of six of these bats by teammate Ron Hunt. Full photo LOA from MEARS (for bat use).
