Probably the most limited of U.S. coin series, the 20-cent piece had a run of just four years during the period 1875-1878. Minted in an extremely limited quantity of 600 total pieces, the 1878 proof date is seldom offered. Designated PF63 by leading certification service NGC, this significant specimen retains a mirror-like finish and has taken on elegant toning. Typical of the proof strike process, this coin’s details are clearly defined front and back right down to the obverse side shield lines and the reverse side eagle feathers. With a rarity rating of 6.6 it’s little wonder this coin has reached the mid-four figure level in the most recently recorded sales.
