Before Lou Gehrig's disease, there was Ross Youngs' disease. "Pep" began to falter in the 1924 World Series, retired two years later in just his 10th season, and quickly wasted away until his death in 1927 at age 30. Before the onset of his kidney condition—Bright's disease, or nephritis—Youngs was a favorite of Manager John McGraw, who called him "the greatest outfielder I ever saw on a baseball field." A nice counterpart to the Youngs signed photo also offered in our auction, this 6-1/2 x 8-1/2" posed fielding shot showcases an outfield advertising backdrop and a P & A stamping. Typical peripheral newsroom wear with a corner chip and a few small edge tears.
