As SABR biographer Ralph Berger points out, "Yellow Horse is considered by many to have been the first full-blooded American Indian to have played in the major leagues. Other Native Americans who played major league baseball such as Charles Albert (Chief) Bender, John (Chief) Meyers, and Lou Sockalexis were not believed to have been full-blooded natives." Among the small number of Yellow Horse's surviving photos, this strikingly intimate example is surely the best both in terms of dramatic visuals and phenomenal image quality. It's date-stamped "SEP 22 1922" by N.E.A. and carries a handwritten editorial notation of "Yellowhorse." An upper-left corner separation has been tape-repaired on the reverse. There is also general wear including several small surface chips (two on right cheek).
