“He was the only man who knew how to keep me in line," said Ruth. This hauntingly intimate portrait of "Mighty Mite" hails from the historic first season of Yankee Stadium and the first of the franchise's 27 world championships, when Babe batted a career-high .393 and launched 3 Fall Classic homers. Although in no way directly connected to master photographer Charles Conlon, the 6-1/2 x 8-1/2" photo is reminiscent of Conlon's famous series of 1927 Murderers' Row close-ups—and we dare say it's just about as captivating a Huggins image as we've ever come across. Notated above the Underwood & Underwood stamp on the reverse is "Miller Huggins 1923." Typical minor peripheral wear from newsroom handling.
