Judging from Gehrig's countenance, this poignant shot appears to hail from the tail end of his storied career—perhaps even his last full season of 1938. The intimacy of the portrait suggests a close, trusting relationship between the legendary Iron Horse and beloved Chicago photographer George Burke, who ultimately teamed up with partner George Brace in an epic quest to create a complete portfolio of all major-league players. The 4x5 crystal-clear acetate negative displays a NM central image area with the typical light peripheral wear of vintage studio-used negatives. Acquired in a 2013 auction of the George Burke/George Brace Original Negatives Collection.
