One needs only to see the catcher's empty glove and skyward gaze to know that this ball traveled a country mile. But there's also the cloud of dust kicked up by Gehrig's feet and the impressive full torque of his powerful swing. The background stadium architecture clearly indicates Comiskey Park—a home of legendary Chicago photographer George Burke, who later teamed up with partner George Brace in an epic quest to create a complete portfolio of all major-league players. Spanning Burke's familiar 5x7 dimensions, this crystal-clear acetate negative displays a NM central image area with the typical light peripheral wear of vintage studio-used negatives. Acquired in a 2013 auction of the George Burke/George Brace Original Negatives Collection.
